December 8 - A Memorable day in Cricket history

December 8 2011 was a day not to forget with lot of actions that happened.

A protest was made by CPI (Marxist) demanding for a new dam in Mullaperiyar. If done so, Tamil Nadu might be in Jeopardy.

Indian share market was suffering huge blow due to European ques. It was almost a plunge of 400 points in NSE. As markets were about to close for the day, India and West Indies started their play which gave a visual retreat for cricket lovers.


India played their 4th ODI cricket match against the visitors West Indies in the 5 series match. The match was played in Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore. India needed 1 more win the clinch the series as they were leading the series with 2-1. The toss was won by Virender Sehwag and he chose to bat first.

Indian openers were Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag. This time Parthiv Patel was not the opener and instead the skipper himself opened the innings. The start was perfect and they played pretty well and established a great partnership. The first wicket partnership was 176 runs which was in just 22.5 overs. After the fall of Gautam Gambhir who got out scoring 67 runs, Suresh Raina came in to bat. Raina was showing poor performance in past few matches and this was the right moment and opportunity to prove himself. Raina utilised this opportunity and scored his half-century. Meanwhile, Skipper Virender Sehwag scored his century and was looking very dangerous as he was in his top perform.

West Indies bowlers were suffering from a lot of damage done by Sehwag. Second wicket partnership was 140 runs. Raina got out and Sehwag was still playing. Virender Sehwag surpassed Sachin's World record and scored 201 runs and thus became the highest scorer and second batsman to cross double century in ODI cricket. After scoring double century, he kept his momentum going on. He stayed till 46.3 over, when Kieron Pollard bowled a tricky ball in which Virender Sehwag was tempted to go for an six and ended up giving a catch at the boundary.

Virender Sehwag scored 219 runs in 149 deliveries before falling for Kieron Pollard. He hit 25 fours and 7 sixes making total boundaries to 32 which is also a new World record. Finally India ended up its innings putting up a total of 418 runs loosing 5 wickets only in 50 overs (IND - 418/5, 50 over). This is also the highest score for India.

West Indies struggled a lot when the newbie Rahul Sharma took 3 important wickets for India. Finally, WI ended up scoring 265 runs and lost all 10 wickets (WI - 265/10, 49.2 over). Highest scorer was Denesh Ramdin who scored 96 runs and failed to get his century.

India won the match by 153 runs and the series as well. Man of the match was Virender Sehwag for his brilliant batting performance.
